Who?

Fisherman

What?

A refrigeration system powered by solar electricity that generates ice blocks.

Where?

The rural fishing community Agbokpa, Ghana. Agbokpa is located in the Eastern region of Ghana, on the northern coast of the southern most finger of Lake Volta.

When?

Solar Ice has a tentative implementation date for the summer of 2019

Why?

Fishing accounts for 4% of Ghana's GDP. Without proper means of refrigeration, fish can expire quickly, resulting in lost profits. By implementing solar electricity, it will help strengthen the economy and in turn improve the infrastructure in rural Ghana.

For this research project, our team is composed of four Cal Poly students from varying majors, backgrounds, and ages from the Fall 2018 class UNIV 391, "AppropriateTechnology for the World's People: Development" taught by Professor Peter Schwartz.
